Associated Laboratory in Translation and Innovation Towards Global Health (REAL)

LA REAL is a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional and highly collaborative associated laboratory aiming at advancing translation science and medicine, in a bench-to-bedside approach, discovering and developing new diagnostic tools and treatments and ensuring that proven strategies for disease treatment and prevention are effectively implemented within the community.

The main strategic goal of REAL is to encourage and increase R&D activities, involving strategic national and international partners,
to increase the impact on global health. We aim to bridge the gap between science and population needs by investing in policy-making efforts, working with national and international health authorities to implement discovered solutions effectively.

Mission & Vision

Mission

REAL is committed to stimulating research of excellence and new discoveries in vaccines, health literacy tools, biomarkers (digital, genetic, serologic), and novel treatments. Our laboratory environment facilitates testing of basic research findings in clinical settings, which helps proven interventions become standard practice. By doing so, we increase the speed at which new treatments reach patients, ultimately improving health and lives. Our activities are aligned with national and European societal challenges and UN sustainable development goals, contributing to a more resilient, digital, social, and global world.

Vision

REAL's vision is to support the development of the most sustainable and best-integrated health system by 2030. This is supported by robust researcher careers, translational science, digitalization, and a strong network of knowledge easily available to experts and health stakeholders. We aim to optimize the decision-making process in healthcare.

REAL is grounded on four foundational pillars

  • 1.

    Advancement of researchers' career development.

  • 2.

Establishing strategic alliances with international and national, private and public institutions.

  • 3.

Upholding the principles of open science, fairness, confidentiality, and trust.

  • 4.

Promoting community and patient engagement, health education, and their dissemination.

REAL laboratory operates across 5 thematic lines

REAL’s thematic lines encompass a variety of emerging topics that are of both national and international public interest. The cross-disciplinary nature of our research fields will enable the exploration and discovery of new knowledge, arising from the intersections at the forefront of each thematic line and its related scientific areas.

Sustainable
Development Goals

It is imperative to prioritize the principal research themes that underscore the European Union's commitment to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, which advocate for universal health coverage for all, at every stage of life by 2030, ensuring that no one is left behind and that preventable deaths are brought to an end.

Therefore, in alignment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, REAL's researchers endeavor to mobilize their efforts to garner increased leadership, allocate additional resources, and devise more astute solutions for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
